In 1989, Linus Pauling (who won the Nobel Prize in chemistry) found that atherosclerotic plaques are not the cause of cardiovascular disease but a means by which the body strengthens arterial walls weakened by a lack of collagen due mainly to chronic vitamin C deficiency. To reduce atherosclerotic plaques, Pauling recommended taking at least three to five grams of vitamin C a day and at least three grams a day each of lysine and proline. These two amino acids are natural chelators of certain lipoproteins that are the main ingredient in plaque.
