A dietary source of omega-3 fatty acids that are precursors to the eicosanoids, a family of endogenous molecules that regulate the body’s anti-inflammatory responses. Most omega-3’s come from cold-water oily fish who assimilate them from the microalgae and plankton consumed in their diets. Salmon is the third-most abundant source of omega-3’s in cold-water oily fish, only out-ranked by mackerel and herring.
WHY WOULD I TAKE IT?
Inflammation, wound-healing, or for high triglyceride levels.
HOW DOES THIS WORK?
Being that EPA is a precursor to the eicosanoid family of anti-inflammatory mediators, it is thought that EPA lends itself to the production of prostaglandin-3, thromboxane-3, and leukotriene-5, which endogenously mitigate inflammatory responses. DHA is actually found as a structural component of the brain, skin, and retina.
HOW MUCH SHOULD I TAKE?
250mgs to 1000mgs of combined DHA & EPA per day. However, Glaxon Pharma’s fish oil has a nicely placed “middle-of-the-road” dose that can be taken in 400mg incriments to obtain the desired effect as needed.
